Coldworm the Burrower releases a frost nova, and the Sand Maggots can deal poison damage too. Go back to Cain again, and this time, he directs you to the Lost City, one of the areas near the Far Oasis.
You'll start the Tainted Sun quest shortly after you arrive, but clearing the Claw Viper Temple clears both it and the Horadric Staff quest. Neither location has branching paths, so you'll reach it eventually. The Sanctuary has four branching paths in the waypoint room. One of them - it's random every time - leads to the Summoner boss and Horazon's Journal.
You can technically just swipe the journal and run if you don't feel like tackling the boss after all the previous fights. Either way, once you have the journal, the Canyon opens up. The Tomb can be seen in the third cinematic in Diablo II.
