Even accounting for the brain's lag-correction , any changes to the landscape within the first feet or so in front of Sonic would be invisible to him. He'd come into contact with any moving object before his brain ever had a chance to notice. No matter how fast you run, you can't outrun the speed of cognitive processing. In order for Sonic to stay alive with the sort of speed he's at, he'd need a whole host of other superpowers just to prevent himself from becoming mush the first time he turned on the afterburners.

The next best thing or worst, given the political climate after his incredible speed is Sonic's penchant for collecting gold. Riches abound in Sonic's world and gold coins almost the size of his body are all over the place. Sonic swoops them up while he runs, tucking them into his… pockets? The in-game rings are about the size of Sonic's head. We'll assume a foot in diameter. Even if we're being conservative, we're talking about an amount of gold equal to a standard gold bar — about ounces, or roughly 25 pounds.

Just three of them would amount to Sonic carrying his weight in gold while running at Mach 1. The number of rings he's able to carry, with no impact on his speed, is limited only by the number available in a given level.

This raises a whole host of questions about his true top speed. Surely if he can maintain momentum while carrying thousands of pounds of gold, he could go faster without that burden.

In any event, carrying even a dozen rings would increase his total weight to five times standard. In-game, if Sonic comes into contact with an enemy or an object sometimes a sharpened spike, dear God , he has a moment of panic and spills his rings all over the place. In reality, the above mentioned physical impacts would only be heightened.

The gold would surely spread across the land at incredible speeds, but Sonic would never have the chance to collect them again. It's lucky that Sonic hails from the planet Mobius, where the laws of physics are surely totally unrecognizable. Because the truth is, he wouldn't last a fraction of a second here on Earth.

At the end of the day though, there's only so much science that can be applied to a fictional character, no less a blue bipedal hedgehog that wears sneakers. Sonic's speed in his video games is designed with gameplay in mind, not science.

Though comics, instruction manuals and even the games themselves may say Sonic can run upwards of 2, mph and into the speed of light, actually depicting that in game comes with obvious complications. Players would be unable to even play a Sonic game if the character moved at the speed of light, and even though Super Sonic supposedly makes Sonic far faster than normal, actually showing that accurately wouldn't make for a fun time not that Sonic's recent games have been all that fun to begin with.

It's all to say that Sonic is as fast as he needs to be or as fast as fans want him to be. He can run across the face of the Earth in a blink of an eye or break the sound barrier with ease. Or, if you stick strictly to his depiction in his game series, he can run really fast, but nowhere approaching the mythic levels of speed with which he's often attributed.

That's part of why Sonic has endured after all these years. Even with hardly a good game in recent memory, Sonic still remains one of gaming's unmistakable icons after 25 years, thanks to his constantly-changing abilities and speed. That's the way it should be, especially if it means we get more and hopefully, better Sonic games in the future.

Officially, and technically, Sonic can run briefly at light speed, with the use of the Light Speed Dash power which itself requires the Light Speed Shoes. Okay Sonic basically has no limits to his speed but it is recorded his average speed is miles per hour, this means he can break the sound barrier in mere seconds, but it was mentioned sonic can go light speed confirmed by the creator of Sonic, but this drains alot of chaos energy, but Sonic's speed can be affected by some environments like icy areas and muddy areas as well, but he is fast enough to run on water due to his speed and weight, lastly his speed is unknown but it is definetly faster than sound he will increase his speed in future adventures and stories.

In Sonic Unleashed Sonic the Hedgehog clocked through the check point of miles per hour, which means this would be Sonic's speed is unknown but clocked in an average of miles per hour as Sonic goes through more adventures his speed would increase greatly. I can't comment, so I'll edit the answer instead. This guy made a fatal mistake calculating sonics speed. That means his max speed in super form is actually only kilometers per hour.
